Hi.

I've been looking through the Timber Framed Buildings category (https://curlie.org/.../Timber_Framing) and noticed that it is very much focused on North American sites, despite the wealth of UK sites showcasing an ancient tradition. Indeed, I've counted more than 180 UK based websites that would be suitable, including that of The Carpenters' Fellowship - I have to say I'm baffled as to why this has been omitted.. such a shame.

I understand that there are millions of websites around the world and only a limited number of DMOZ editors so I'm not surprised to notice that this category hasn't been updated since 14th Jan 1012 (I believe it was in response to some observations I made then regarding dead links). I am, however, not the only one who's disappointed at the North American bias of the listings present. I'd also mention that I suggested my own UK based timber framing site for this category in 2008 (or thereabouts... ish) and am still waiting, twiddling my thumbs... but I have to conclude that whoever maintains/edits it isn't terribly interested.

That aside, there are a number of websites listed in the category that strike me as either incorrectly listed* (ie. suited to a different category) or spammy** (ie. point to a completely different website from that listed or coded to function in a way that could be viewed as less than honest).

* Boards by George Lumber Co (http://www.boardsbygeorge.ca) - it's a sawmill, not a timber framing company - there's a big difference.

** Arontec Inc. (http://www.arontec.com) - coded to frame and prevent back clicking.
** Montana Timber Frames SA (http://www.hauteroutetimberframes.com) - redirects to different site.
** Village Post and Beam (http://www.vaxxine.com/postandbeam) redirects randomly to either a paid blogging site or another "webring" related site.

I hope this is useful and correctly presented.

We create subcategories (in this case probably a Regional/UK one) when we have sufficient sites to do so, and an interested editor ;)
Editors can edit in all the subcategories under categories they are named in, and there are several hundred with directory wide permissions. However, there is no specific obligation to do so as editing is a hobby activity not a job.
The North American bias is imo logical as for a longish time Europe was behind in the usage of Internet - There is no reason other than available sites / editor activity for this tendency not to be reversed...
Your help with Quality Control is appreciated, why not go further and apply for a category ? (the UK one I've linked above is suitable for a new editor) B)

FTR George moved to a better category, Arontec OK as is, Montana removed and Village works better without the www in the URL for me.

Hi mrix,

A quick check of the categories listed in #5111 shows non of these URLs currently listed. It appears that they had already been removed from the live directory some time ago. Please be sure you are reporting problem links from an actual dmoz.org link rather than an outdated copy somewhere else.

Hi, if you do a search for metal detecting like many like myself would do you still see all these url`s come up ? having just checked, if you check the individual category the above are no where to be seen?
There is some kind of issue here for people using random keywords like I did as these listings are still live in the system here.
Thanks

There's a bug in our rudimentary search which can show up listings that have already been removed. AOL is aware of the issue and will no doubt fix it in time.

The category itself is definitive not our search, the latter being primarily intended to find an appropriate category.
