correcting a large number of URLs

Our site contains several hundred reviews of individual products. ODP recently picked up all of our category pages... over 100 links! Hurray for the dedicated volunteers! However, we just released a new version of the site with new URLs. Is there a way to submit our URL updates in a single file to make it easy for someone to update them? I can create a spreadsheet with category, old URL and new URL. Or should we just submit the updates from each category page on ODP? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Have I been doing something wrong?

My site is www.vintagedesignerclothing.com . The site title is Vintage Designer Clothing. Unsurprisingly, that is what we sell. In January (approx.), my webmaster submitted this site and two other sites in the Shopping:Clothing:Vintage category, which had approximately 100 sites and no editor (and which could and should easily have several hundred other sites). His application was rejected. In March (approx.), I reapplied to the directory. I have not heard any response to that. I reapplied again today. My site description is the following: Selling vintage designer clothing, shoes, and accessories, specializing in women's clothing and men's ties, plus unique clot…

Hello, Editors. I've just found out about this wonderful forum and decided immediately to register for the membership. I'll get right to the point as I know all of you are volunteers with limited time resources. I'm an administrator for the site that we've been trying to get listed in the Open Directory for about two months. I'd would really appreciate if someone could check the status of my submission. I submitted to the category TOP/GAMES/GAMBLING/BLACKJACK and followed all the guidelines as closely as possible. The site's url: http://online-blackjack-game-downloads.com (I hope it's O.K. to post a link in this forum) Thanks. You are all doing a…

Stuck and can't get out
by Guest -- 2 replies

My site was originally submitted in January (I think) and stuck in a category for shopping "Top: Shopping: Publications: Seniors" which would be fine except for there is no shopping at all on our site and we didn't put ourselves there. The title was also misspelled although that certainly could be a typo on our part as well. The problem is that I've submitted update requests since the site's original inclusion but there is no editor listed there or the category immediately above it. I tried submitting to other categories but I think editors are seeing where we are listed right now and rejecting it automatically as an attempt to go where we don't belong. Can any…

Site Reputation Problem

Hi ODP editors and congrats on the launch of your forum. I'll get right to my problem - I am an SEO and I recently signed on a new client in the business of dating and introductions. Now this company had been using another SEO for some months before they dumped them. The problem is that their previous SEO had apparently been using unethical methods to get their site listed, including creating duplicate sites to the main site.com such as othersite.com, other-site.com etc. In the process, I've learned they attempted submitting these sites to a range of search engines and directories including multiple submissions to ODP. Now I have cleaned up their horrible spam attempts to…

Hello, I have been trying to submit a multi-subject site for about eight months now. My site(www.crosscustomworks.com) has three main subjects pages. Fine Art, Ornamental Wrought Iron,& Custom Motorcycles...talk about diverse. I read something about deeplinking. I am confused though. Can I subit them like this: www.crosscustomworks.com/Fine Art Frame Page.htm <TO> Arts: Visual Arts: Drawing: Artists www.crosscustomworks.com/Wrought Iron Frame Page.htm <TO> Arts: Crafts: Metal Craft: Blacksmithing: Smithys www.crosscustomworks.com/Motorcycles & Hot Rods Frames Page.htm <TO> Shopping: Vehicles: Motorcycles I have been confused as…

Hi all! I'm sure this topic has been covered, but I've followed all the guidelines for site submissions: (submitted, waited for 90 days, resubmitted, waited 90 days, emailed category editor, waited some more...) Do I just keep repeating that process? (I don't want to annoy the editors...)I have several sites that are stuck in this same kind of "limbo" here at ODP, in different categories. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have submitted my site to Business: Financial Services: Loans several times during the past 8 months. I have not been added. I emailed the editors about a month ago with no reply from them. Granted, my site uses affiliate links, but I am adding new content all the time since I am a "Bad credit" resource. I have a new section called "consumer tips" with related articles and advice. This column continues to grow. I would really like some help or advice on getting added to the directory. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Changing the description for my website.

Like others I have tried to get a description changed on my website that really works for me. Since relevance is determined by keywords in the title and description I have been trying to get my keywords included in my description, without success. My catagory is: Shopping:Home and Garden: Swimming Pools and Spas: chemicals. A good description would be: A non-chlorine algae control product using copper and silver ionization to prevent algae in swimming pools, koi ponds, hot tubs, or spas. Any help or suggestions on how I can get my description changed would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have been attempting to submit my site since last July 2001, with no luck! The category I chose: Shopping/Visual_Arts/Portraits_from_Photos/Pets/Digital I have tryed again recently, and notice there is NO EDITOR for this category. Is that the reason the site has not been reviewed and submitted? I would greatly appreciate any assistance you can offer. Thank you. [edited to make link clickable - apeuro]

OK to email editor about submission status?

I'm curious as to the status of my submission, but I don't want to be a pain. I know these things can take time, and don't want to be pushy. Is it okay to email the editor of a category about the status of a submission? If so, how long after submission should one wait? What if there's no category editor, is it okay to contact the editor of a parent category? What's the polite thing to do?

Are e-mail newsletter sites okay?
by Guest -- 5 replies

I like this forum. Starting to understand ODP a bit better. Question: Submitted a site about three times since last summer to a regional category. It's not in, yet. At the site, users can subscribe to free weekly e-mail newsletters about residential real estate sales in two counties in the state. Do you think the site content might be the problem? Are e-mail publication sites okay? Could the category I selected be wrong? It's a bit of an odd ball product, a regionally specific e-newsletter. It's hard to know where to put it. I submitted it to Arizona:Business_and_Economy:Real_Estate. Thanks in advance.

Changing the category

Hi! I have a problem.. My site was taken to the local category.. I did not sumbit there, it just appeared there, although there is only one thing - phone - to show the geographical position of the office. The problem is we are worldwide service company and such listing makes no good for us of the branding point. Is that possible to change the category to the global?? Yahoo has this feature and they have changed ours ( their editor has choosen the local too, but after the explanation they have took us back to the global category). ODP does not allow 1 site to be in different categories.. Please, let me know what is the solution here!! Thanks a lot!

Hi there, I operate a real estate directory (www.RealEstateSurfing.com) and have a questions regarding regional real estate submissions. I submitted the www.ontario.realestatesurfing.com page in December and received a listing for a few days in the (Top: Regional: North America: Canada: Ontario: Business and Economy: Real Estate) category for a week or so but it was dropped. I emailed to ask why and was given a response (see below). I'm not sure what I did wrong but any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Russ <START> From: [edited] To: [edited] Sent: Wednesday, March 20, 2002 5:59 PM Subject: ODP Feedb…

Robozilla at my site but no ODP link.

I submitted my site to the ODP about a month ago. To my knowledge I am not listed in any cat I can find. I also tried the search. No listing. Robozilla visited me yesterday. From what I understand, which isn't much /images/icons/wink.gif, Robozilla only searches ODP sites looking for dead links. Am I listed? If so where. Does Robozilla test links before adding them to the directory? --james

First of all, thank you for creating this forum. It is nice to see how well people are treated and how speedy it is. I have a question about how I should try to get our site listed. We have been aiming to get listed as a “shopping” site for approximately 8 months now (Shopping: Crafts: Supplies). We have only submitted 3 times in those 8 months. From what I have picked up here, I may have made a mistake by submitting to the “Shopping” category. My understanding is that the category has a large backlog. Would it make more sense to submit to another category? The category of “Business: Industries: Wholesale: Craft Supplies” is just as appropriate as the “Shoppin…

Site Inclusion Problem

I submitted a site to: http://dmoz.org/Business/Industries/Manufacturing/Polymers/ Consultants/ in late January. Because it was never indexed, I resubmitted in mid-March, yet it is still not included. This category has no editor, so I am unsure how to inquire on why it has not been added. Any ideas? Thanks.

Categorized Portals

I understand that pure affiliate listings are not supported by DMOZ. How about categorized portals with hundreds or thousands of links (still being affiliated) combined with extended services like e-mail, newsletter, forums, info's, news feed, multimedia and such. The way the categorization and all other services might help internet users to find their way around specific topics easier or in different ways, might justify to have those directories and portals listed as second resources besides the Yahoo's of the world, wouldn't you think? See (and you have possibly guessed it already, I have developed such portals and just don't get listed in DMOZ, maybe because of man…

Hi, I have submitted my site to the open directory and it appears under Health/Alternative/Nutritional supplements. My question is that when I do a search on DMOZ it does not come up in the results. Why does DMOZ not know the site is there? Thanks, Tony

Searching URL submission progress

I propose a feature where submitters can check their URLs progress. Wouldn't this be a great feature. It would stop people doing multiple submissions if they are rejected. I put in my URL a couple of months ago www.fitforsummer.com and it hasn't been listed. I have submitted it again but am worried that the editor will have 2 submissions in his/her queue and I will be blacklisted. So such a feature would stop this. Any body else think this is a good idea?
