advice on moving categories?
by Guest paloalto- 2 replies

If your site is listed in one category, but is better suited for another, what's the best strategy for doing this? An update URL request for where it's currently at? Or submitting and ADD URL in the new category? I don't want the editors thinking that I'm spamming when submitting it for a new category when it's already listed. Thanks.

As I still haven't managed to get listed after submitting three months ago. I submitted to the category COMPUTERS/SOFTWARE/HUMAN RESOURCES and followed the guidelines as closely as possible. I did resubmit a couple of other times; could this be the cause of the non-inclusion? However, there is no editor assigned for this category and so I'm not sure if this category is in abeyance until another is found (I did volunteer but not accepted). Anyone any ideas? Thanks Jonny

I was just curious as to why the database has not been updated since July 8 - I (and I am sure many others) have done submissions and have not seen them.. Is this common? Thanks for your input?

I am currently working on a site offering a shopping review service. Each shopping site is given an impartial review by our staff, and we plan to allow users to review each site as well. At the moment the sites reviewed have affiliate links to each merchant. Is this service going to be banned due to the affiliate links? The URL is:http://www.british-online.com/bo/ Thanks in advance. My site, 'Building Brands' (www.buildingbrands.com) has been listed under dmoz.org/Business/Marketing/Positioning/ - thank you. However, the site contains a broad range of marketing content. I feel it justifies a listing under dmoz.org/Business/Marketing/. How do I get listed at this level? There is no facility to submit urls at this level. Thanks.

Precisions on Unique Content

I am a little confused with the "unique content" concept eheh... Our company proposes an entire range of garden decoration products. As a result, we are logically listed under Garden Shops. But most of the people look directly for what they want, and they will finally find a category "Windchime", another "Weathervane", another "Birdfeeders, Birdhouses and Birdbaths", etc. Can you tell me if the content of our site is unique-enough to aplly for those categories that are more targeted. If yes, should I use the classical submit form, or email the editor explaining why we should be in there (how to find his email also I am not sure)... I just don't wanna waste editor's …

Multiple Links / Deeplinking
by Guest -- 3 replies

HI- Been lurking a few days trying to find the answer to this question and I don't think I have yet. I have a localised site that gives a lot of detail on things to do. In particular, I have detailed a lot of information on neighborhood parks that can't be found anywhere else online or in print. I visited nearly 100 parks, photographed them, and made notes of the amenities and features they had to offer and detailed driving directions. My main site is listed in ODP in the proper category and that is great. Many of these parks are in regional localities that have 1 or 0 sites listed. Would it be appropriate to submit a deeplink to the specific page for the par…

Do I need to submit to each search engine that utlizes Dmoz, or does submitting to Dmoz alone take care of this. Eg. do I need to submit to AOL and the others individually or is this considered spamming.

Hi, I need some advice before requesting a couple of changes to a site at www.universalrope.com. First, he's in a category that doesn't fit his product offering and I couldn't find a category that does. They are not a rope manufacturer, nor do they sell rope. They do however make net products from ropes. Second, his description says they are a rope manufacturer. He's currently in this cat: Top: Business: Industries: Industrial Supply: Rope and Rigging with this description: Manufacturer of ropes, and rope products including netting, rope helicopter landing pads, lashing, and slings. Contains products and services. If you visit his site, yo…

Is there a formal rejection letter?

Is it standard practice for ODP editors to send a rejection e-mail for sites that they reject? I submitted a couple of sites some time ago and just haven't heard anything, and even resubmitted one of them as well and still haven't heard anything. The sites that I am working with are www.disector.com and www.bradyandartists.com, can I assume that they are in the queue somewhere?

Not allowed to submit URL

OK, I've got a website I want to add to a category of Accommodation. I'm not allowed to add the website, because I've got to submit it to the regional directory. Problem is, I don't see the point in doing this, because the site supplies hotel in every continent, and not all of the continent categories have editors. What's a guy to do??

If you are a business that has a physical location you qualify for a Regional listing in the dmoz.org directory. Regional listings do not count against you in getting listed in another branch of the directory. If you are having problem getting listed by your site's topic submit to the appropriate Regional Locality and I think you will be surprised how quickly you achieve joy. If you happen to hit an editalls or metas area of interest and your site is good you might get listed in that sought after topical category as well as in Regional - 2 listings. I suggest that if you qualify for a Regional listing and have not already submitted - do so now. my 2 cents.

More accurate category for site
by Guest -- 1 reply

I have just submitted a request to update http://www.covisint.com. This site was listed in the Computers: Software: Business: E-Commerce: Business-to-Business: Exchanges category. Since Covisint is an automotive exchange company, we feel that Business: E-Commerce: Marketplaces: Automobiles is a more fitting category. I have updated the description for this site and in the comment area put that I wanted to change the category the site was in. I have also submitted the site to the category we believe best represents the site. Neither of these categories have editors, so I wanted to bring this to someone's attention. Thanks!

Title guideline question

Hypothetically, if a business name is Mike Smith & Associates, but the domain name is www.1financialadvice.com, would the Title "#1 Financial Advice" be accepted by the ODP Editor? There are many examples of listings reflecting the domain name as the title when the company name is something else. The first character being a number puts the listing at the top of the list within the category. Thanks.

My wife invented a new skin care concept and technology explained at "keracell.com". We produced a unique consumer product now sold at facegum.com (in the cue at shopping/health/beauty/skin_care/anti_aging). We incorporated Andrea Abbott Cosmetics to help find business partners "andreaabbott.com". It's a new concept and we find the info best understood by business or consumers one site at a time. We'd like to submit keracell.com to "health/beauty/skin_care" and the company site, "andreaabbott.com" to "business/industries/manufacturing/consumer_products/health_and_beauty/cosmetics" (no editor). We see larger companies dividing their information, but are we asking too mu…

Ok, I have been suckered into the typical "list your site" scams, but since that muck, I have gone straight and am now going bankrupt in order to fulfill my destiny. That is, if an editor would crawl my site www.theexchangeplace.net and tell me if there is any, I repeat any low life grunge on my site that is preventing me from being listed. I venture to say that most people who have been unemployed for 7 months want to try and get it right. What's my site's problem guys?

This is the official reply from [edited] --- Your site has not been listed in the Open Directory because it is half way between an affiliate site, and a links list. There are no unique designs on your site, just links to other peoples designs. Since we intend to list all the individual sites anyway, we don't need to include another site that simply lists them all. I'm sorry, but that's the way it works here. [Edited] --- I replied saying that buy-tees has over 500 unique designs representing other people using cafepress.com and my own t-shirt printing business. I also in my first email requested he referred me to a more appropriate category if this one was …

Hello, I have finished making the website webhostnext.com and am ready to submit it to DMOZ but would like you to have a look at it. The only thing that i am concerned about is the domain registration link which takes it another website. This is not an affiliate link but another partner website that provides domain registration solutions as i cater for only web hosting solutions. So is it against the law?

Should I update url?

My site (www.memoriestomusic.com) is listed in the DMOZ directory under the correct category, with the correct name, and correct description. However, since it's been listed, I've done extensive optimization regarding keywords etc.. Is this a reason to do an update url? thanks, Tim

Site is: Micro-Sys ApS (http://www.micro-sys.dk) so far "only" located: "Regional: Europe: Denmark: Business and Economy: Computers". Although I am happy I finally got included on DMOZ (thank you) I would like to ask if site does not also belong in: "http://dmoz.org/Computers/Companies/Software_Development/" I originally posted to that category without getting accepted but.. Since we do both "custom" (primarily where we earn money) and "consumer" (primarily on webpage) software, I would think it would be an appropriate category?

Need help placing an affiliate shopping site

Need help placing an affiliate shopping site I realize ODP does not want sites that sell affiliate products in shopping from reading the boards, but if not listed in shopping then where? The site in question (for submission) sells a variety of products, from heath care to computer software. We see a lot of other sites in DMOZ that we would consider competitor sites (due to the fact that they are selling the same products), some with affiliate links, some with their own stores and some that are a mixture. Most have managed to get listed in a variety of different areas and are spread all over. But where does ODP want affiliate sites listed.....or does it? And what would …

Listing book sites that don't sell directly

If an author or company publishes a book and posts content about the book and does not sell it directly but has a link to Amazon or another shopping site where the book can be purchased, is there an appropriate category in ODP to submit the site that contains info about the book or the section of the site that contains info about the book? There are categories for specific titles such as: http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Publications/Books/Business/Specific_Titles/ but they state that only sites that sell books can be listed. At least some sites in these categories fit the scenario above (provide info and seem to be the official site for the book but sell via affiliate …
