We are sad to announce the passing of editor jimnoble on November 18, 2014. Jim joined DMOZ in August 2001. He was given meta-editor privileges in 2003 and was responsible for joining thousands of editors to the project. In addition, he was very active in all aspects of the directory, and at Resource-Zone and other Webmaster forums. His contributions cannot be overstated. If you'd like to make a donation in his name, the family has suggested they go to St Barnabas Hospice or Marie Curie Cancer Care in the UK. He will be missed very much, as an editor and a friend. In Memoriam

There is a search plugin for DMOZ available from the Add-ons repository for Firefox. With this search plugin installed you can search the ODP directory directly from your browser. It works on Firefox and Internet Explorer. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/15005

Have you taken a look at the World area in the ODP? This is the part of the directory where sites with content not in the English language are organized. Have you noticed that there are quite a few languages which are not represented in there? Ever wondered why? Well, we need an editor that is fluent in the language in order to be able to list sites, and create categories in that tongue, and for some languages there is a distinct lack. Take a look in Curlie - Test: World - the second list of languages are ones where we have no corresponding World category. This is where we put sites which are in the language, but where we don't have enough knowledge of that …

In a neighborhood garage, getting the state vehicle inspection...manager's business card has URL across the bottom... Reading mail while waiting for the mechanic...bank has new name and website...a couple of bank fliers with URLs... Passing a construction site...parked landscaping van, with URL across the side... Just another day of driving to work.

You might have noticed that ODP at the moment are uavailable to access. That's because of an outage of the dmoz.org server. Right now we can not tell how long time this outage will last. We are currently working on fixing the problems.

It has been estimated that the Open Directory Project increases in size by 1000 listings per day. So what kind of sites are editors eager to list? This thread is the place for editors to share some of their additions.

Anyone reading these forums knows we constantly hear from webmasters and site owners who are distressed that we do not review their sites in what they perceive to be a timely manner. Heck, you may even be one of these webmasters who found this thread hoping to find a clue to getting listed. We often find ourselves giving generic answers because we have found that it is highly counterproductive discussing the specifics of a given site – as the discussion usually ends along the lines of "if you spent less time talking to me and answering questions in this forum you could have listed my site." Today, however, I do want to talk specifics. And these specifics make an e…

[The following article contains general advice that is intended to cover the majority of situations. All editing decisions and policies are governed by the editing guidelines, and take precedent over any conflicts with advice given here. In other words: this is intended only to be helpful, and is not the final word on the subject.] Tip #1: Only submit an update when there is a factual error in a listing that needs to be addressed. Listing updates are primarily intended as a means by which a factual error in a listing can be identified. Most editors, when they see an update request, first verify the accuracy of the request. “Is the existing listing accurate an…

(No, not this site or DMOZ, as far as I know.) Every once in a while, a site we consider a good resource decides to move all their pages around. Then we have to scramble to find new locations for all the pages of interest. Some examples include: -http://www.rollingstone.com (over 1300 pages moved) I'm actually not familiar with this reorganization -- I'm summarizing what I observed in the live directory after reading some notes in the internal fora, which I can't repeat here. -http://www.tvtome.com moved to -http://www.tv.com TV Tome was acquired by CNET and most of structure was moved, but not all of the content. If anyone sees a listing for either site …

Sometimes an editor or a group of editors will start an initiative to improve a specific area of the directory (cleaning up, increasing the number of listings, improving category structure, etc.). This thread is for editors to describe some of those initiatives.

The Regional section of the ODP, and their equivalents in different languages in the World section, are amazing places, where major businesses and international attractions can sit right next to the local school district and hair salon. This is especially true for the smaller localities that haven't collected enough sites to be subdivided by topic. And then there's the localities that haven't collected any websites yet. Well, we're working on that . New locality categories are being added all the time. Examples are Lower Macungie in the Pennsylvania, and Oostvoorne in the Netherlands. Many more are waiting to be created. Know of a small town in your area that doesn't a…

Some editing results Last fall, I kept some detailed statistics on my editing efforts in Regional/North_America/United_States/Arizona and its subcats. I thought I would share some of those statistics: I processed 69 unreviewed sites. These sites had been swimming in the unreviewed pool for a total of 2,517 days, or an average of 36.47 days. [it is worth noting that in counting the days, I used the submission date if the site had not been touched by an editor prior to this visit, and I used the date the previous editor had touched it, if it had been moved into the current category.] Two sites were processed within one day. One was a brand new submission that wa…
