recent changes in DMOZ

Since yesterday, a couple of pages that I am familiar with in the directory seem to have reverted to an earlier version (judging from the "last edited" date and the disappearance of recent additions). I am surprised that this has not been mentioned here yet... At the same time, I also noticed a great improvement in the speed at which DMOZ pages load. New hardware? What is happening? Thanks for letting us know.

I had to sign up for a new account to post. My old account was "stuntdubl" and someone had just changed me to "editor" on my title. Now my name doesn't work, and when I try to have my password sent to me, the e-mail address is not found. Could someone look into this for me please?

I have notice that each I tried to submit my new web sites to ODP(in different categories), I get "500 Internal Server Error" twice or thrice and then the submission form accepts the requests. I don't know wheather the others are getting such errors, but I have experienced this Thanks Vikas

Hi All, I'm having trouble submitting from the uk I get an error message which advises me to mail the webmaster - I have done this in the past but not recieved an answer so thought I should post it here. Message says....... 'The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.' and comes from dmoz.org/cgi-bin/add2.cgi. Any thoughts or fixes surely appreciated. Cheers Sinclair

I would like help in submitting my site. I have tried to submit for the last 3 weeks and keep getting a "500 Internal Server Error" message. I have emailed webmaster@dmoz.org">webmaster@dmoz.org</a> many times without reply. I have waited for three weeks and I still am getting the same message. Still no service for submissions?

I've been trying on and off for the past two weeks to submit a site and get either nothing (site not found) or Internal Server Error message. Doesn't vary with the time of day, ISP (broad band or 56k) - what's the story? Has the server not yet been fixed? Is the service "broken" - if so is it temporary or permanent? When you do a search on our company it shows the directory we are in, but when you click the link and go to where it says we are....we aren't there. We use to be there. Actually, we would like to be in another category. I had difficulty finding the best way to go about doing that. Let me know if you need specific information to help me with this problem. Thanks

Does anyone know if google is moving away from using ODP descriptions since I have noticed that some sites included in DMOZ are not showing descritpions at google... Anybody got any ideas why this would be?

A new member to this marvellous forum has just sent me the following private message: I've managed to find out that they are using Norton Internet Security, but I'm not familar with that particular product. Can any one post any advice? They can obviously log-in correctly (and the cookie being passed correctly between client and server), but what else could be preventing them from posting? And how can it be fixed...

Use of absolute URLs and Swiss mirror

While the category pages, as well as SOME of the other pages are given as relative URLs in the HTML code of the dmoz website, (probably) most of the other pages are coded absolutely with the This makes links unpleasant to use when visiting the Swiss mirror (which from here in France works, while the main site is awfully slow) : it is necessary to cut-and-paste them into the browser window, and add the "ch." by hand ! Hi all, I am a newbie editor at DMOZ. Ever since this today morning (GMT + 5 and 1/2 Hrs) I have unable to log into the editor dashboard. The link provided at the DMOZ front page repeatedly asks for username and password, which I supplied correctly to no effect. Thinking that I could have mistyped, I got the password again through mail. Still no luck. Is this a local problem? By the way, my PC is sitting behind a corporate firewall. Thanks, Manoj

Hi, I came to this site to ask for the status on my site submission, but I'm having trouble remembering exactly what category I listed in my submission. So my feature suggestion is: Shouldn't submissions be followed by a email receipt from dmoz.org? That way you'd know that my email account is real, and I'd have a mail with all relevant info... Now I have to search through the directories all over again to find the exact name of my site's category (Online Ear Training, where's that? <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" /> )

I've only noticed this happening today. Whenever the General ODP Issues forum shows new posts and I go into the forum to look at the new posts, all of the posts in the thread are marked read. Kind of weird.

Idea for some sort of DMOZ thesaurus

Do you find that where you think there should be a category there isn't one because you couldn't think of the right word and so links that should be together are all over the place? Maybe there could be some sort of catalogued commonly related words that people could type in to make sure they are getting it right. As I was writing this I had an even better idea. How about (this could be incredibly complicated) instead of having to search for the correct category straight away, key words could be entered e.g. university student department and it could give you some sort of percentage of relevance from some sort of calculation of the section title and the words in the ca…

Search database update?

I have a listing for stuffwithnames.com which an editor updated and place ain a new category in early November. It's been almost three months since the update and the old listing still shows up in any search. Why is this? The caption on the Dmoz site says the search database was updated on Jan 20th. I don't get it, will my correct listing ever show up?
