broken link in search results?
by Guest ErnestoX-

Hello Editors, we have submitted my wifes site some months ago. If I search for her name "Ana de Medeiros" with DMOZ search, I find her located at: see search result here Clicking that link gives a 404 error while the direct link to her site works. Problem 2: Google Directory shows a similar link when searching for "Ana de Medeiros" this link also shows the page description of DMOZ for her site, but she is not listed on the page. Obviously the two pages (DMOZ<->Google) for that category differ in about 80% of all entries. What's wrong here, are these problems possibly related to each other?

Be Stricter to Speed Up Submissions
by Guest swiftrhett-

I submitted a site to DMOZ over a month ago, and honestly, I just want it to be submitted to help my google ranking. However, I was very careful to make sure I submitted it to the correct directory. I hear of a lot of editors spending hours re-sorting submissions to the correct directory. I would much rather DMOZ simply deny anything submitted to the wrong directory. This would do 2 things: 1. Greatly increase the number of submissions to the correct directory. 2. Save the time of editors, so that correctly submitted URLS get added faster. Just an idea, Rhett

Hi All, I just submitted a couple of sites - on redirection I was given a page stating that they could not resolve some such and that the submission would be held for spam checking. What exactly causes this - I'm sure I never had this problem before when submitting - and will this hold up the possibilty of my sites being accepted. Cheers Sinclair

Small mistake in Editor's application form.
by Guest ravisimpi- 1 reply

I have come across a small mistake in the Editor's application form. 'Explain your interest in the subject of the category for which you are applying to edit:' this sentence has got two spaces between the words 'which' and 'you'. I don't know how much this will affect to the ODP. I thought it would be better if I mention it.

Update URL - Not Working
by Guest RAAFlight- 1 reply
- 2.4k views
I tried to use the Update URL button and when I entered the site's URL I was returned a message saying it was not found in that cat. I double checked and the URL was correct. It may just be a temporary problem I'm sure, but perhaps someone could make the change or let me know when I should try to update again. The site is http://www.raajobs.com in the category: http://dmoz.org/Business/Transportation_and_Logistics/Aviation/Education_and_Training/Pilot/Fixed_Wing/ Our company is now called Regional Airline Academy Flight Schools, so the title needs to be changed to that, and the new URL is http://flight-schools.raajobs.com This new URL is the only URL now, www a…

Past editor showing as active on a category
by Guest Shaun- 2 replies
- 3.1k views
I encountered an error when I went to email a follow up message on submission done to the category: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Data_Communications/Ethernet/Optical_Ethernet/ When I clicked on the editor's profile it loaded and showed 4-5 other categories that the editor maintained. When visiting these other categories, however, the respective other categories did not show this editor as responsible for the category at the bottom of the page. When proceeding with emailing the editor using the email form off of the editor profile, I received an error: Error No such editor modemman - Just a weird glitch. Shaun

I was trying to submit a website to http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/California/Localities/N/Newport_Beach/Business_and_Economy/Real_Estate/Mortgages/ but every time I clicked add url and I was redirected to http://dmoz.org/add.html , and when I tried to use Update url link I received the following error No such category 'Regional/North_America/United_States/California/Localities/N/Newport_Beach/Business_and_Economy/Real_Estate/Mortgages' Please go back in your browser if you need to resubmit the form. Could someone tell me if it was something I was doing or is it because the public site is out of sync with the editor’s site? Thanks again for y…

I feel a good way to improve the current order of the listings in all the DMOZ categories would be to use the same method as Google, i.e Sort by Page Rank. Presently, having all sorted alphabetically would assume the browser knows the name of a site they want. If this were the case then I doubt they would even use the directory. Googles Page Rank order would make the most popular sites float to the top. Dave

Pagerank woes
by Guest vajrafist- 4 replies
Hello, I have installed the google toolbar and have been wondering what the pagerank for my site will be. I waited about a month at PR0 and then I ran my site through a server diagnostic tool and found out that my IP was blocklisted, apparently someone at my server had been a spammer/pornographer etc. So I changed to a new server and obtained a dedicated IP address. That was over a month ago. I am waiting for my submission to ODP to be reviewed but googlebot has indexed my site. My pagerank is still 0. Im wondering if there is still a problem I dont know about. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -Dan www.buddha-dharma.org

Gobbledigook in listings?
by Guest johanna07- 6 replies
- 3.1k views
My apologies if this has been mentioned somewhere already. I see that there is some gobbledigook in listings: http://dmoz.org/Arts/Movies/Screenwriting/Script_Consulting/ (Screenshot on www.attention-to-details.com/temp/dmoz-scriptconsulting000.jpg) What causes this? (Asking mostly out of curiosity while I'm waiting - just like everyone else - for the DMOZ upgrade to finish so I can submit my own site... Thumbs up to everyone ) Thanks! Johanna

Bad category name???
by Guest robva- 2 replies

Hi, I was trying to add my site www.goedkopehost.nl to category "World: Nederlands: Computers: Internet: Commerciële Diensten: Webhosting", when 1. the websoftware didn't accept my submission stating "This site already exists in the Open Directory" (while that isn't the case) 2. as it offered me the possibility to edit the URL, I curiously entered that option, after which 3. it told me "No such category 'World/Nederlands/Computers/Internet/Commerci%eble_Diensten/Webhosting' " Do you notice what happened to the word "Commerciële"? On dmoz.org it's translated into "Commerci%eble" - which I think is a bug that causes submitting to that category to fail. Would you…

I just wondered if we should keep trying when served with a 500 error page - or if we should mail the webmaster - I'm sure he's well aware of the problems. Just want to clarify that it's ok to keep hitting the submit button in the hope that I'll get a success at some point. Cheers Sinclair
