Hi everyone.

I'm trying to suggest an URL (category: Society: Subcultures: Geeks and Nerds: News and Media) and when I click "Suggest URL" I'm always receiving this error:

Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /cgi-bin/add.cgi.

Reason: Error reading from remote server

I tried Firefox 2.0.0.11 and Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180 SP2 for Windows and Safari 3.04 for Mac, and I keep getting the same error.

Any idea?

You seem to have the same problem again.

This just results in a page stating a proxy error.

Yes, we had some kind of problem and the scripts were down. We hope it´s fixed now.

I just encountered this issue also. What's the usual turnaround on fixing the scripts (if it's even the same issue)?

Both the "suggesting URL" and "applying as editor" scripts are working now (what I can see at least).

As a web designer I find it very suspicious that the same and similar errors occur 24 hours a day 365 days a year at dmoz for what, 5-6 years? I have scoured the web looking for reasons why I get the proxy error for add.cgi every time I try to submit. In this particular forum there always seems to be someone who pops in after a post to say it is a temporary problem and another who says it is working again, yet they are always followed by another who says it isn't working. I don't get it. For being such an authority on the web, dmoz can't make a few scripts work and I am not impressed.

I would prefer an honest direct response about this problem. Why is it so hard to submit? Why is it so hard to update? Why is it so hard to get a truthful response? I am so glad that not every authoritative source works in this manner or the Internet would be no more.

The ODP servers are owned by AOL and run by AOL systems engineers. ODP editors have no code or operational access. We are merely users (with different permissions and scope) as are you. When things go wrong, we tell Ops. Usually, they are able to kick start things again.

You say you're frustrated. I can assure you that your levels of frustration are minor compared to those felt by editors who are trying to enjoy their hobby.

There is no real problem. It is just that at some times the servers get overworked wth all the requests, either made by people suggesting websites or editors doing something in the inside.

It si not. Suggesting a website is very easy, a task that anybody should be able to acomplish.

It is not. Just suggest an update and take care that the website confirms why the update should be made.

All our respinse are truthful. It might be that they are not the responses people are hoping to read.

Ah, but we don't want to be like every other source. Why would we need more of the same.

I have the same problem for over a month now, getting:

on submitting from latest versions of firefox, IE, chrome accessing Internet from mexico city. I tried to mail to staff@dmoz.org as I found that adress on dmoz webpage, getting adress rejected error.

When I tried to register as editor, I took an hour reading terms and services completly and mailed best links I got during last year (I am Internet-Professional seeing at least 40-50 new pages each day!).

After revising Spanish- Mexican- local section, I found at least 5 examples that do not fit dmzs own publishing rules. Sorry, if this is demotivating to someone but regarding mexican volunteers only conclusion is, DMZ got a club of SEO-Experts abusing the purpuse of this service for Ranking interests.

This proxy error is a known issue and AOL technical staff is aware of it.
It is not happening often and we are sorry that you encountered it several times.
The only thing we can advise you is to try it again, preferably after waiting some time and after clearing you browser cache.

If you applied as an editor and did not get an answer within 14 days you can ask a question in the "Becoming an Editor" part of this forum. But please first read the thread marked " Important: Forum Guidelines - READ BEFORE POSTING" in that section.

If you noticed websites that should not be listed anymore (it happens often that websites change and are no longer listable) please let us know by either sending an update request on DMOZ or by posting in the  "Quality Control Feedback" section of this forum. We always welcome such help.

I can understand that you are not happy after you encountered the proxy errors but I totaly do not understand how you can come to such a conclusion based on totaly not related issues.

I've been trying to add my website (suggest adress) to category "Top: World: Lietuvių: Kompiuteriai ir Internetas: Svetainių kūrimas ir priežiūra: Dizaineriai: Nepriklausomi  (6)" and I still get error Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /cgi-bin/add.cgi.

Reason: DNS lookup failure for: core.dmoz.aol.com

and its no mater what I try to do, I'm still getting this error. Have no idea what to do.
