HI
I have been trying to submit URL to Dmoz. After finding the relevant category and going to submit URL, the page returned claims that page required cannot be found and it throws me out of IE. I have deleted all cookies in case it could be something to do with this, but his hasn't helped.

The servers have technical problems. Please try again in a few days.

Thanks for your request and your attempt to suggest a site to the ODP.
Unfortunately the servers are down due to hardware issues and you'll find cached data only. Both "suggest URL" and "become an editor" are not operative at the moment.
So please do try again within the next few days.

Jim, you are too fast... :)

If we knew the answer to that question, we would all (fillin your favorite fantasy).

We simply do not know, and those working on this issue indicate that the cause is complex and not lending itself to a simple solution. They have kicked the boxes in all the right places and are now getting new boxes to kick.

It happened on a Friday afternoon, and it's now Sunday morning, so two weeks and almost two days, to be exact. I have every faith in the tech people, though; I'm very certain that it will be fixed eventually.

I truly am sorry that dmoz is having problems. What about us poor saps who just want to be searchable on google? Are there any suggestions for alternative submission sites? It used to be so easy, submitting sites.

Thank you, yes it is unfortunate that the problem has not yet been fixed.

I'm afraid we have no influence at all on what Google does, and as they are usually many months behind with downloading data from the ODP, I think a two week hold-up is unlikely to make much difference. ;)
As for where to submit your site, there are many other directories on the web, and if you need advice about which one(s) to choose, you could ask on one of the webmaster forums. This forum relates only to ODP matters. :)

If you don't want to wait for Google's spider to find your aite, you can always submit the URL directly to their search engine and it will spider it when it gets to it. Note that submitting a URL to the search engine is not the same as suggesting one to the directory.

Wow !!

This is the largest open source directory. And affliated to Netscape. Still nothing happens when the key features are down for more than 2 weeks.

Cheers!! The system is going places (wonders where?)

Best Regards
Paul

Thank you for your good wishes, they are appreciated. As you probably realise, the volunteer editors who man the Resource-Zone have no way of fixing the technical problems at dmoz.org, and we are waiting more eagerly than anybody outside the directory for the servers to return.

Fully understood. Hope things get sorted out soon at dmoz.org otherwise it will be a big scar on the entire concept.

Best Regards

Some minutes ago I tried to submit our web site.

I found the appropriate category, but clicking on the "submit URL" link, I got a message that there are some problems, and that I shall try again in a couple days.

Though I read above that this issue is already know since a while already.

Does someone know when this problem will be solved so I can try to submit again?

Thanks a lot in advance for your kind support.

John

*sigh*

I have no luck. I JUST launched a commercial art website four days ago and really need the traffic that DMOZ has consistently provided to me for my other sites. I adore DMOZ, it's a noble effort and volunteers work very hard. Frankly, I don't understand the malice and venom I'm reading here. (The Beowulf thread, in particular, is a riot. My husband would call him an "intelligent idiot." Such pettiness from one who would seem to embrace the grander concepts of the human spirit.)

DMOZ is a huge and very helpful volunteer effort. With all the vitriol, you'd think it was the Republican Party. ;)

I hope it's up and running soon.

Anxious and disappointed Webmistress,
Peapodgrrl
